Monkton MD Homes

Monkton History

History truly comes alive in the small Baltimore County town of Monkton.  Centuries-old buildings and farmhouses are still standing in the area and even the newer Monkton, MD homes are built in the same Colonial and Greek Revival styles of the more venerable houses in the neighborhood.

A portion of Monkton MD Real Estate is part of an area known as My Lady’s Manor, a National Historic District that stretches from northeastern Baltimore County to western Harford County.  Originally an immense tract of land that measured 10,000 acres (or 40 square kilometers), it was appropriated by Colonial Maryland governor Charles Calvert, the third Lord Baltimore, in 1713 and given as a wedding gift to his fourth wife, Lady Margaret,  Baroness of Baltimore.  Originally known as Lord Baltimore’s Gift, the land eventually passed on to Calvert’s granddaughter, Charlotte Brerewood, who deeded the land to her father-in-law who, in turn, leased lots to farmers and laid out the community of Charlotte Town which we now know to be Monkton.

The U.S. Government confiscated the land after the Revolutionary War and auctioned it off, parcel by parcel.  Today, My Lady’s Manor retains its distinctiveness and a lot of the lots are still owned by the original families.  You’ll still find markers along the boundaries of the Manor with the inscription “’Lord Baltimore’s Gift’ Deeded 1713.”

In keeping with the area’s historic character, the architecture of Monkton, MD homes leans towards the graceful, stately lines of the Federal and Late Neoclassical styles.  Set against a backdrop of lush, forested meadows and hillocks, these elegant Monkton, MD homes present an irresistibly charming picture of gracious country living.  Homes here are usually priced from $600,000 to $800,000.
